Southwest Series Masters Class

Hey Tad, I will not be at the BBDH because there are too many details to pull off the S.L.A.P. and the A-Bomb. This means that you will be coming to NM with a point advantage for sure, but you'll have to do well in the timed bank slalom and A-Bomb to hold it for the 40 years old and over Masters Class Series Win. I wanted to keep the Masters at 45 and up but then it would have just been the 3 of us...so I had to let in some of those promising youngsters. Either way we'll ALL win with tons of riding, racing and fun!

Are you on a budget, or have a price range? You can go crazy with gear, longboarding has many different niches now. For basic cruising I would look at some of the Gravity boards, they have good beginner wood. Not sure what length you are looking for.....Not sure if you want a kicktail or not, but Gravity has something for everybody at an affordable price. Depending on the width of the board Randal R2 trucks (150 mm or 180 mm wide) are a good pick and can be transferred to another deck if you upgrade your deck later. Use a basic rule of thumb that the center of your bearings should be as wide as the board. Some say to the outside edge of the wheels, whatever. Wheels, probably something in the 70-75mm, 78-81a durometer range to roll over stuff better. Hopefully you arent in California (like I am) and have to pay the near 10% sales tax (9.25% where Im at), if it were me I would look for an online shop outside of Cali if you live in-state. Most offer free shipping and no sales tax. And no I dont work for Gravity, just seen they have some decent wood for a fair price and they can do completes. Motion Board shop is decent, Muir Skate, are Daddies pretty good online retailers. Let me know if you have more questions.

Lookin for advice on choice of gear for longboarding as my 4yr old girl and 6 yr old boy have just taken up boarding so I feel I could do with some excercise to complement my diet...A year ago I had an unexplained blackout and was banned from driving for 12 months and this destroyed my morale completely but the arrival of my little girl last Friday has spurred me on to get myself sorted out.Need to know what board to get as I am currently 310 lb (before accident 188lbs!) and height is 5ft 10ins so this is my dilemma but any help would be fantastic and last time I rode was 23 yrs ago !!Many ThanksChris :D

Only in single lane, jam or time-trial format is it fair to combine the groups. If any given group isn't sorted by qualifying and separately bracketed, no one in a group actually raced each other fairly, based on proper bracketing. For instance, the Masters, reviewed as a group and sorted by their qualifying times, would then go on to race each other in their various brackets, allowing only the Masters to properly eliminate each other and advance.

I've been troubled by the various subdivisions in Slalom events for quite some time now. I don't believe there are enough older racers to further sub-divide the >45 category. I also am very reluctant to leave the herd and isolate myself in that particular age group, as competitive as it might be and of course as cool as the participants are!I also have issues with self-declaring open or pro. The one year they used qualifying to sort racers, I consistently qualified as a pro and was pleased to find myself 11th overall at the '04 Breck Nationals. If you need to insist that you belong in the open class, go ahead and sandbag, but be prepared to also be called a sandbagger. I believe most events returned to the "self-declare" method in '05, and really found myself less than enchanted with the status quo of event organization in the Slalom community.I still feel like the scene is so fragmented and random that almost anything can happen: Promoters declare a Worlds or Nationals in conflict with each other; Racers say they're pro, open, master; groups are combined based on turnout; qualifying isn't used to fairly sort the field (sure once you declare, they detail the brackets based on qualifying) . . . my end perception though is that there's very little commitment (by promoters and the skate industry), to actually provide any real incentive to spend $$$$ to travel to events and insure that there's a good field of the best racers at a top level series. At the core of this is the dearth of "legal" and available venues . . . newcomers often realize that they're going to be in constant opposition with property owners and authorities everytime they practice. That seems like a fundamental flaw in the foundation of the slalom scene and after a decade of the "rebirth" it still remains marginalized. Slalom is having a hard time getting out of diapers.I'm 56 now and get to sessions occasionally, yet still find it hard to get motivated to make the effort to get to any given event. In fact, the underground events now seem more attractive, because they make no pretense to be anything other than a bunch of skaters getting together to have fun.I still freeride and bomb . . . would love to have more local activity in Santa Cruz that's not obsessed with slalom, cause we're routinely rousted nearly everywhere when it comes to placing cones and frankly, it's a bit of a drag to feel like to do it here you have to go it nearly alone. As a sport, is it really worth pursuing if you can't fit it into your life in your own community and are constantly forced to blow time and money on driving long distances to ride marginally decent hills? I guess the answer would be yes for a good many other sports, so maybe that reveals my own narrow mindset. I just long for a pastime that is simple, nearby, exciting, and has actual community (meaning more than 2 or 3 active participants).I know this probably comes off as negative and apologize for popping out of my hibernation for a diatribe. I LOVE slalom. I LOVE bombing. More than anything I LOVE the time I've spent with friends rolling on four wheels. I just can't believe how small, fragile and marginalized our little community always seems to feel.

The only thing I'm giving you Rick is a pat on the back...well said. Is there really a need to split Masters up further? Yes they do it in USASA Snowboarding, but they had 1,000 total competitors the last Nationals event of theirs I went to! Do we really have to have groups split up so that everyone wins something? At 45+ we are definitely grown-ups.Yes there is a difference in level throughout the Masters, but so is there in [b:2h47mysq]every[/b:2h47mysq] other group. This is called "Racing", thats how it works. People lobbied long and hard for a Masters Category, lets leave it as it is... We are all in the same boat regarding age, practice time etc., actually I'll bet some of the [i:2h47mysq]'Grand Masters'[/i:2h47mysq] have more time and money to train than some of the Masters.Someone in your age category is much faster than you? Get over it! Train harder, eat better, get your 'Race head' right!In the next few years racers of the quality of CBark, Richie, CKnuck etc will be racing with us, relish the chance to race against some of the 'Greats' of Slalom Skating, I for one look forward to it!

OK - not putting anyone down here, just providing a viewpoint. Why divide up masters? So what if it is a tough field? There are never any guarantees of trophys for anyone in racing. I race snowboard races where I am 36th out of 46 racers (USSA Nor-Am), where I am the oldest by ten years, and I am ecstatic and happy to be there. I also race in the USASA "Legends" (40-49) class and have been beat by "old pros" in Nstional level events. It's a kick for me to see how close to them I can get time-wise. I have raced sailing Nationals where I was 26th of 40, several times - awesome experience and great to learn from those who are better. In any sport, if the field is tough, then it is tough, nuff said.OK - folks...give it to me! ;-)-RF

Seems like where Cliff and I were headed with our earlier comments was "where do the Grand Masters race?" or "how to pull out placings for different Masters age groups".Sorry Cliff if I put words in your mouth.How things best work out often depends on who shows up to race.When I was leaving Hood River this summer, it seems that many were discussing dividing up Masters into A and B based on qualifying.

It does end up skewed if you have every one race each other and then try to separate out the Masters or Juniors etc. I am hopeful that the Masters Class will continue to grow (more than the Juniors or Womens class did?) Otherwise we may as well just run the Masters, Juniors and Women together! With out a grass roots community based program to introduce young skaters to Slalom the obvious outcome will be an aging race roster.

But then after qualifying, what happens in a dual event? It works for single lane GS, but not for anything else. If you take final results from the qualifying, the only fair way under this system, it then means that masters won't end up racing masters most of the time...I thought that was the whole point?

Yeah, you have a great suggestion. The idea of getting separated out from the main group and put into a group with limited numbers is not so good. It is better to just let the race go on and use the results to determine placings for classes after the racing has completed. This has often gone on in the past, and worked out well.
